Amidst rising tensions between India and Bangladesh, the Bangladeshi government has taken a significant step. The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has immediately banned the broadcast of all Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in the country. This decision comes after a dispute involving the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. This move has not only shocked the cricketing world but has also raised questions about the future of India-Bangladesh cricket relations.

The BCCI had instructed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Mustafizur Rahman before the IPL 2026 season. He was considered a key player for KKR. However, his release without any clear reason sparked outrage in Bangladesh. There, it was seen not merely as a sporting decision, but as an issue related to national pride.

A statement issued by the Bangladesh government said, This is to inform that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a directive regarding the exclusion of Bangladeshi star player Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders team for the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament, which is scheduled to begin on March 26, 2026. Under these circumstances, it is directed that the broadcasting/telecasting of all Indian Premier League (IPL) matches and events be suspended until further notice.
Bangladesh has refused to travel to India for the 2026 T20 World Cup
The Mustafizur controversy is no longer confined to the IPL; its repercussions are now being felt in international cricket. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) requesting that its matches scheduled to be played in India during the 2026 T20 World Cup be shifted to Sri Lanka. The BCB claims that, given the current circumstances, it no longer has confidence in the security and fairness of matches played in India. According to reports, Bangladesh has made it clear that it will not send its team to India for the T20 World Cup in February 2026. If this decision is implemented, it could create a major rift in cricketing relations between India and Bangladesh.
