The historic Mestalla irrigation canal, which was developed and reinforced between the 10th and 11th centuries during the Moorish dynasty, originally ran outside the stadium's South Stand, and had to be crossed to access the pitch. As of January 2020, it is the oldest stadium in La Liga. Mestalla is considered one of the steepest stadiums in the world and is commonly regarded as the steepest in Europe. [6] This characteristic sets it apart from stadiums such as San Siro (Milan), La Bombonera and Monumental (Buenos Aires), Maracanã (Rio de Janeiro), Signal Iduna Park (Dortmund), and Stamford Bridge (London). The upper tier reaches an inclination of approximately 34-35 degrees, very close to the legal safety limit (37°) established by FIFA and UEFA. The proximity of the spectators to the pitch also makes it unique, as very few stadiums offer such a close viewing experience.
