Jacob Duffy made his T20I debut for New Zealand in December 2020, becoming the first cricketer from Southland to represent the national team since Jeff Wilson in 1993. Possessing the ideal traits of a fast bowler—height and the ability to swing the ball both ways—Duffy took time to refine and fully utilize his natural gifts.

His early days in New Zealand’s Under-19 setup were marked by a flawed bowling action that faltered during the delivery stride. However, as he progressed through the ranks, he corrected these technical issues, notably by straightening his followthrough. These adjustments played a key role in earning him his maiden international call-up in late 2020.

Duffy made an immediate impact on debut, claiming four wickets and securing the Player-of-the-Match award against Pakistan.
